By the beginning of my junior year of high school, I didn’t really know what I was going to study in college. Then she pointed out that, if I was interested enough, I should definitely take the accounting course at our school. I did, and I instantly enjoyed it. It was the first class that ever made sense to me in a way that would take way too long to explain here. Then I took and really enjoyed macroeconomics the following semester. Things really started coming together when I had multiple conversations with my accounting and economics teachers. They showed me how practical and essential having a business pedigree is while noticing how my skills in their classes translated well to a career somewhere in the business world. Wrongful conviction is define as a person who is currently serving a sentence via incarceration for a crime they did not commit. After the discovery of innocence, the department of corrections system exonerates them. What stops it from becoming a solemn story is its intensity, ambition, and unfamiliarity. OConnor blends the line between humor and terror. She introduces her audience to the horror of self-love. The grandmother is thought of by the community as agood person and appears to be so on the surface, but she is also mean and narcissistic. She forces her family to abide by her wishes; she sees them as an extension of herself; and she seizes every opportunity to get what she wants. By manipulating her grandchildren, she gets her son to go back to the house with the secret panel, causing them to meet The Misfit, and ultimately sealing the entire familys death. OConnor makes the trite seem sweet, the humdrum seem tragic, and the ridiculous seem righteous. The reader can no longer use their textbook ways of interpreting fiction and human behavior because OConnor is constantly throwing our assumptions back at us. Through out A good man is hard to find OConnor reinforces the horror of self-love through her images. She contrasts the two houses, The Tower: the restaurant owned by Red Sammy, and the plantation house. The restaurant is a broken-down place- a long dark room with a tiny place to dance. At one time Red Sammy found pleasure from the restaurant but now he is afraid to leave the door unlatched. He has given in to the meanness of the world. In contrast to the horrible Tower is the grandmothers peaceful memories of the plantation house that is filled with wonderful treasures. However, the family never reach this house because this house does not even exist on the this dirt road or even in the same state. Because of the grandmothers pride she cannot admit that she has made a mistake. Its not much farther, the grandmother said and just as she said it, a horrible thought came to her. The thought was so embarrassing that she turned red in the face and her eyes dilated and her feet jumped up. (144). The grandmothers pride and self-centered wish to see the house causes the Misfit to discover and murder the family. Both houses are, in effect, ruins of the spirit. It is a comic view of the family that the reader receives in the first half of the story. The comedy is in the way OConnor has very matter of factly and nonchalantly reported the characters outlandish actions and appearances. OConnor has made this even more funny by not appearing to tell it in a funny way. The grandmother is the funniest and most colorful of the characters in the story; she is pushy, annoying, and at times an endearing grandmother. OConnor makes the grandmother a target for her satire right from the beginning by exposing her absurd wardrobe and old-fashioned mannerisms. The grandmother had on a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet. In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once thatshewas a lady. (138) The last line becomes ironically funny because ultimately this is where the grandmother ends up- in a ditch dead. As a reader one must then question the seriousness of the author towards her characters and should the reader have a sympathetic view towards these characters when they are being presented to an audience as comical figures and an elaborate joke. If more attention is paid to the storys self-conscious technique, then the reader can adjust their sympathies in a way that would coincide with the storys style. King Arthur The mystical references to Arthur and his adventures are dated in literature in some form for over 1400 years, verifying the enduring appeal of this romantic character. Since the beginnings of the English language there have been legends of great heroes. The first settlements of Britain produced stories rooted in ancient Celtic and Germanic imagination; of the many, Arthur is undoubtedly preeminent. The earliest known description of Arthur's noble endeavors was written by Gildas, (ca. 490-540) the author of De excidio et conquestu Britanniae makes reference, albeit vague, to an Arthurian figure; however, the name Arthur is not mentioned in the story (Strayer 564). The full flourish of writings associated with his miraculous feats and victories do not reach a crescendo for several hundred years after Gildas (Strayer 564). During the Middle Ages, however, Arthurian myth was prominent and en vogue and attempts to discover the truth behind the myth have been pursued for generations. Arthur's history, as Geoffrey Ashe reminds us in The Discovery of King Arthur, is "more than just a medley of yarns, more than just a saga in the romanticism of myth. It puts him within a definite period. It names definite places and takes him to definite countries" (3). It is this fact and the fragmentary, often contradictory references of an Arthur (the Latin "Artur,"Arturius," or "Artorius") from ancient records, that lends enough validity to the story to set researchers on the Clodfelter 2 trail of the legendary king. However, progress has been stymied for a number of reasons and even now we can say little of substance about the man behind the myth. Another problem facing historians is that the earliest sources we have are never originals, but copies, and considering their age we must allow for the propagation of errors. One possible such error is found in the Annals of Wales, written in the tenth century. Its entry concerning the Battle of Badon claims that Arthur carried Christ's cross on his shoulder for three days, but it's likely that "shoulder" should instead be "shield," due to confusion between the Welsh words "scuid" and "scuit" (Alcock 51-52). The search for the truth of legend continues. Perhaps the best known of all Arthurian legends is that of Geoffrey of Monmouth. His History of the Kings of Britain, (ca. 1136) "Besides planting highly erroneous notions of British history,...supplied a basis and framework for Arthurian romance and exerted an influence extending through Spenser, Shakespeare, and many others" (Coglan 209). In it, Geoffrey recounts the history of Britain's leaders back to their beginning in 1115 BC to King Cadwallader's death in AD 689. Many inaccuracies exist in his description of the period. If there is an Arthur, he will not be a magnificent Christian king sitting astride a heavy Byzantine charger, accoutered in Norman plate armor. He will not be basking in a mighty castle between European excursions with a band of international knights; rather, he will be no more than an unkempt and possibly pagan military leader with little if any armor. He will likely have a small entourage of hired regional soldiers and live in no better than a crude wooden fortress. Percy Lavon Julian was an African American chemist, inventor, and businessman however, he didn’t start out that way. Percy was born on April 11, 1899 in Montgomery, Alabama and was the grandson of a former slave (Britannica Biographies). He was the oldest of his six siblings and his mother was a teacher and his father took a job as a railway mail clerk (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Growing up, Percy faced racial prejudice not only in this personal life but also in his professional life. Percy attended school up to eighth grade but because he was African American there was no high school open to any black students. He traveled to Indiana and applied and got accepted to DePauw University of Greencastle, however since he was unable to attend high school he had to take high school level classes at night to be able to be at the same educational level as his classmates (Bio.com). Despite not going to high school, leaving his hometown, having to take night classes, Percy over came all these obstacles and graduated as class valedictorian and with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Percy Julian shared his life with his wife Anna Johnson who was a sociologist at Howard University while he was teaching there as well when they first met.
